First Legion Kalkriese unique!
The die plate of a sword scabbard in bronze from the upper Esch Kalkriese ( Fund No. 10 926 ) With clearly the initials "LP " as the Ritz inscription (varus Courier No. 8, Dec. 2006, p. 3 ).
ie clearly L Egio P rima - first Legion .
The findings identified in other "P" was already taken by Prof. Wiegand (see the separate post on the thinking of Professor Wiegand in this context) in connection with the First Legion. The proposed "L" now grants from any lingering doubts.
This proves that Varus could not have been in Kalkriese because the Legio I Germanica 9 AD stationed in Mainz and not involved in the Varus battle (was Marcus Junkelmann, "The legions of Augustus', p. 97, Mainz 1986 ). Legio I Germanica
This was first used by Germanicus 14-16 AD, after their transfer to the Lower Rhine between the Rhine and the Weser.
Mt Sincerely
Prof. Dr. Siegfried G. Schoppe
